After completing the initial questionnaire, you will be seen by the massage practitioner. The massage practitioner will perform an extensive interview where you will be asked about your reasons for getting a massage, current physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, and specific areas of pain. If necessary, you will then receive a physical exam, which may include testing of range of motion, postural assessment, special muscle tests, etc. These steps will all help to determine the appropriate massage for you.

If necessary, you will then get undressed to your comfort level in a private room and slip between clean sheets on the massage table. The massage practitioner will undrape only the part of the body being massaged to ensure that modesty is respected at all times.

Most massages last an hour, but other times may be considered (for example: 30 minutes or 1 ½ hours). A person desiring a massage for pain relief should initially receive massage 1-2 times per week. Someone seeking relaxation massage can receive a massage whenever they like (once per week, once per month, etc.)

Massage is used for relaxation and general well-being and is excellent for stress reduction. Massage is also used in the treatment of injury. It can enhance medical treatment and may improve the rate at which the body recovers from injury and illness.

Relaxation Massage:

Relaxation massage is the most popular type of massage. There are a variety of modalities that can be used to accomplish relaxation, but Swedish massage is the most common. Swedish massage involves a variety of strokes (effleurage, petrissage, friction, etc.) that flow together to create a smooth, relaxing massage.

Relaxation massage provides benefits other than simply relaxation. It can help the body rid itself of stress and/or toxins, give the muscles a minor workout, move metabolic waste, increase circulation, lower blood pressure, clear the mind, and on and on. Your body is not only relaxed physically, but energetically as well.

Treatment Massage:

Massage does so much more than just feel good. Treatment massage is very different from relaxation massage. With treatment massage, the entire body may not get massaged because the massage is usually focused on healing a particular area. The whole goal of this type of massage is to get you out of pain and get your body back to optimum functioning.

Techniques that are common in this style are: Cross fiber friction, Linear friction, Hydrotherapy, Trigger Point/ tender point, Soft Tissue Release, Deep tissue, Deep muscle releases, Myofascial release, etc.
